Vogue Singapore Presents The Second Annual Singapore Prize

Vogue Singapore and Farfetch have joined forces again this year to select an aspiring young fashion designer as the 2023 Singapore Talent Prize recipient. This cash prize of S$3,000 from Farfetch will come with a U30 internship at Vogue Singapore and one-year membership at Mandala Club; other finalists – Ali bin Salim, Daryl Qilin Yam, Pan Zheng Lei (Pan Cheng Lui), Rma cureess — can showcase their creative talents through campaign concepts related to Vogue Singapore’s theme Reverie.

This prize was established to commemorate Singapore’s 50th birthday and recognize publications which had made an outstanding contribution towards furthering understanding of Singaporean history among Singaporeans. Administered by National University of Singapore’s Department of History, it will be presented every three years.

A panel of five judges will announce their winner by the end of October. This year’s shortlist features historical tome Seven Hundred Years: A History of Singapore by Kwa Chong Guan, Tan Tai Yong, Derek Heng and Peter Borschberg; as well as Kamaladevi Aravindan’s novel Sembawang which chronicles life at an estate during the 1970s. These novels and non-fiction works shun traditional historical accounts as mere chroniclers – instead exploring what events meant for average citizens, as their authors say.

At this year’s award ceremony, Prince William graced the green carpet alongside some of this year’s winners who received their awards at a gala dinner held at The Theatre, Mediacorp. As patron of the Earthshot Prize, William noted how solutions offered by each of 15 finalists – such as an Indian maker of solar-powered dryers, a soil carbon marketplace and organizations working to restore Andean forests or combat illegal fishing — demonstrated there was still hope in humanity.

Archaeologist John Miksic took home the inaugural prize with his book Singapore and the Silk Road of the Sea, 1300-1800 which provides extensive archaeological evidence that the nation began 700 years ago. Kishore Mahbubani of NUS serves as chair of jury to institute this prize award.

Earthshot Week will showcase Earthshot Week winners with events highlighting their innovative solutions to global issues like climate change, ocean pollution and biodiversity loss. Thought leadership and innovation sessions will also take place during Earthshot Week; global leaders, business executives and investors can attend these sessions to explore collaboration opportunities with these finalists.
