What is the Hongkong Prize?

Hongkong Prize is one of Asia’s premier writing competitions. Every year it attracts thousands of entrants from across the world; each winner will receive monetary prizes as well as being invited to an awards ceremony and receiving international exposure. Young writers can use this contest as an invaluable way of building their careers and portfolios of work; those interested should carefully read all rules and regulations prior to applying.

Nominations this year included activists fighting for freedom and democracy – some who have even been arrested or imprisoned while pursuing their causes; social justice initiatives and community service projects (for instance a non-profit providing shelter to homeless adults); research into human spirit (like that conducted by a scientific team despite an infection threatening to destroy it); as well as individuals or groups who demonstrate how perseverance prevails in spite of difficulty. All these individuals and groups represent heroes who demonstrate how human spirit triumphs under duress.

Winners of the Hongkong Prize will be presented with HK$10,000 and given the opportunity to present their ideas directly to key stakeholders within the development sector. A judging panel will evaluate each entry on its impact and relevance to the community, while researchers with winning ideas can take part in seminars and workshops organized by HK Phil and its Principal Patron, Swire Group; winning researchers may also visit some of Hong Kong’s premier research facilities in order to explore cutting-edge scientific research in Hong Kong.

applicants for the Hongkong Prize must submit an original research article related to their field of study, such as clinical studies, observational or epidemiological articles; meta-analyses or review articles are ineligible. Furthermore, articles must have been published within one year prior to award in Hong Kong Journal of Medicine.

Each of the five award categories will have its own judging panel that is responsible for devising and administering competition rules for their awards, publicizing them to potential entrants, inviting entries, and conducting a preliminary evaluation. Overarching coordination for HKAI will be handled by an Organising Committee comprising representatives of universities, researchers, and innovative enterprises.

HKAI is fully funded by the Government and administered by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation. It serves as an incentive to academic researchers in Hong Kong to continue innovative exploration, develop their research findings into practical applications, and transform R&D results into commercial products or services – in turn increasing Hong Kong’s competitiveness within global economies.
