The Hong Kong Prize 2024

The Hongkong Prize recognizes exceptional scientific research that transforms R&D outcomes in Hong Kong. It covers five fields – artificial intelligence and robotics, life and health sciences, new materials and energy research, advanced manufacturing technology and FinTech. Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited offers winners access to top-of-the-line research facilities for six months as part of this HK$2 Million prize, giving them a chance to collaborate with local scientists as well as broadening their international network.

Professor Leo Poon from HKU’s School of Public Health was among those honored with an HK Prize award this year, for his pioneering research and analysis on emerging viruses such as coronaviruses and influenza viruses, which has increased preparation among Hong Kong residents against such viruses. As part of the HKU-Pasteur Research Pole he represents Louis Pasteur’s spirit by conducting “science without borders”.

Prof. Fan Zhiyong from CUHK has made significant strides in biomedicine with his groundbreaking studies of cell and tissue engineering, contributing to organ-on-a-chip systems for drug testing. His study allows more accurate diagnosis of diseases as well as aiding treatment strategies and new medications being created.

Professor Zhang Xiaoqing from the University of Hong Kong was honored with another HK Prize award this year, for her contributions in mathematical theory and its application across business, finance and engineering fields. She pioneered using mathematical techniques to predict complex systems’ behavior which has wide-reaching societal ramifications.

The 2024 Hongkong Prize recognizes and rewards an elite group of young researchers who have excelled in science and technology disciplines, showing great promise for further growth. Nomination criteria this year included young researchers from Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

HK Prize winners also have an invaluable platform from which they can share their innovative ideas and discoveries with the world. They will have access to Hong Kong’s premier exhibition venues such as Goethe Gallery and Black Box Studio where their works can be showcased.

HK Prize is an exceptional platform for young artists to showcase a wide variety of art in various forms while promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion through their works. This initiative raises public awareness of art’s positive effect in daily life and highlights its power.
