The 2023 Hong Kong Prize Winners Announced

The Hong Kong Prize recognizes third-year students of participating Hong Kong secondary schools who demonstrate excellence in scholarship while excelling in community service, leadership or related areas. Winners will each be given a HK$1,000 prize book and book coupon. This competition serves as a highlight event of Global Scholars for Hong Kong program and is supported by City University of Hong Kong.

This prize was established through a donation from Professor Wang Gungwu, funded through the sixth round of government matching fund scheme and funded through his generous donation. Professor Wang’s generous gift will fund two prizes within the Department of History – one honoring outstanding undergraduate performance, and another rewarding excellence in postgraduate research.

Prof. Jia Jiaya of The Chinese University of Hong Kong was recognized with the 2023 BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize in artificial intelligence and robotics, while Professor WONG Siu Lun of The University of Hong Kong won in life and health, while professor AU Man Ho Allen from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University won both prizes in new materials/energy/advanced manufacturing respectively.

Dr. Huang Yanyun from The Chinese University of Hong Kong won this year’s award for her pioneering use of small molecules to alter cell fate and state, including reprogramming somatic cells into pluripotent stem cells. Prof. ZHANG Tao from The Chinese Academy of Sciences was recognized for his contributions to single atom catalysis theory and applications while Zhejiang University professor SUN Binyoung earned recognition for her seminal contributions in representation theory of Lie groups, particularly her multiplicity one theorems for classical groups as well as theories of theta correspondences.

Shadow Li earned first place in journalism with her piece entitled, “The Silver Lining”, an exploratory three-part story on elderly workers continuing to work beyond retirement age. William Xu was awarded second prize with his article entitled, “How Secure Are Our Older Buildings?,” discussing possible risks associated with aged buildings in San Francisco.

At the 25th Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, 217 local runners received special incentive awards. Under the Special Incentive Award for Marathon, permanent residents who complete their marathon under 3 hours and 30 minutes for men or 3:30 minutes for women can earn an HK$10,000 prize. This award comes on top of the 1st Division Prize of HK$8 Million – which was the highest prize money ever for any marathon race! For more information about this race click here. The Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) is an annual awards ceremony organized by Hong Kong Film Critics Society and Hong Kong Filmmakers Association to recognize the finest local and regional films released each year, and voting takes place from January through March each year.
