The Hong Kong Prize for Young Filmmakers

The Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) is an annual prize awarded for movies made in Hong Kong since 1993. Established by an association comprised of representatives from thirteen professional Hong Kong film bodies, voting takes place each January-March among registered voters including both local film workers and critics.

Winners of the top three awards are invited to an art activity and will receive a certificate of achievement. Eligible students can also apply for scholarships with Wharf for further studies in art; details will be made known after competition results have been released.

Lui Che-woo founded this prestigious international award with the intention of “advancing world civilisation and instilling people with positive energy,” awarding over HK$20 million (more than twice what the Nobel prize would award), in three categories each year: sustainability; welfare betterment; and the ceremony theme (which changes each year). Past recipients have included sustainable food chains, community care organisations and environmental campaigners.

This prize, the highest in its region, aims to recognise and foster young talent across art and culture fields. To determine its winner, written, visual, oral presentations as well as personal interviews will be used. Judges from around the globe and professionals within their fields serve as judges.

Alongside the top three prizes, there are also consolation prizes and a People’s Choice award to those that placed second or third, with many winners going on to further their careers in music or acting – even winning one TVB contract!

The winning entry must demonstrate strong Hong Kong identity, originality and innovation with potential social impact. Submissions must not have been published previously and submitted in English; teams may submit up to three entries each; winners are chosen at random by Chinese University of Hong Kong with first prize consisting of cash of HK$10,000 plus trophy; second prize includes plaque. Applications can be submitted either online or downloaded as PDF forms from here by 1 December 2020 – submission deadline!
