When it comes to keeping your pool warm year-round, using innovative products can do much more than simply keeping it running on regular electricity. They can reduce both your environmental impact and household energy bills significantly.
Prior to swimming pools and aquatic centres, people would make use of nature’s own seawater by visiting beaches and ocean pools – whether natural or artificial – for swimming and recreation, especially along the wild coastline of Sydney where people could experience its full force of the waves.
Sydney and NSW now boast one of the highest concentrations of ocean pools in Australia – many are over one century old! Why do so many Australians flock to these watering holes, and when did they first appear on our landscapes?
Ocean pools first came about as an answer to an ongoing problem – that of accessibility. While nine in 10 Australians live within 20 minutes of a public pool, their locations vary significantly between councils with larger populations such as Parramatta or Randwick having more aquatic centres than smaller centers such as Mosman or Merri-bek, plus regional communities where transport links make reaching pools challenging.
As a result, many ocean pools have been preserved and maintained, while others are being closed down. Coogee and Bronte baths will close this year as they are replaced with new seawalls; Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre’s upgrade will cost taxpayers $17 million more than expected.
The new walls will be constructed of durable fibreglass composite that resists damage, rust and corrosion – meaning your pool will last much longer while also helping reduce maintenance and repair costs.
As well as offering increased water clarity, these new pools will also be more environmentally-friendly than previous pools. By consuming less chemicals and being devoid of sand and algae, they will make swimming safer while decreasing pollution risk.
Once final designs and approvals are in place, construction can commence. A team will prepare the site, excavate the pool and install its fibreglass shell – typically taking eight weeks to finish and ready for summer enjoyment!
