The HK Prize for Secondary School Students
The Hong Kong Prize recognizes scientists who make significant contributions towards global civilisation, inspiring others to work toward creating a harmonious society. Winners receive monetary prizes, trophies and the chance to showcase their research at an awards ceremony. Furthermore, winners gain access to some of Hong Kong’s premier research facilities while networking with fellow scientists from all around the globe.
The prize is open to secondary school students in Hong Kong who have been nominated by their teachers, with entries accepted online only. A panel of judges will select their favourite works before awarding HK$8,000 as prize for winning student artist and their school receiving HK$20k; other winners will also be presented with awards worth HK$3,000 each.
Film professionals predict that this year’s winner of the Hong Kong Film Academy Award (HKFA) top prize will be A Guilty Conscience by Soi Cheang, widely expected as an anticipated local blockbuster that could challenge internationally released hits like Cold War and Ip Man. A Guilty Conscience boasts an experienced production team comprising veteran actor Tsui Hark as well as Academy Award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh as producers.
This year’s theme, “Our Changing World,” invites artists to interpret global evolution through the social, cultural, and technological dimensions of change. Shortlisted works represent established local artists, community artists and youth artists working across mediums; furthermore all chosen works relate to some aspect of change such as climate change impacting biodiversity or art as migration–whether its effect is felt on biodiversity or art as migration–in some way.
As organizer of this award, The Newspaper Society of Hong Kong received 617 entries from 12 Chinese and English newspapers across Hong Kong. Despite a difficult economic environment, newspapers continue to play an essential role in shaping Hong Kong’s identity and culture by giving young people a platform through news articles to express themselves creatively.
