The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) Wins Orchestra of the Year

Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) made history last October by becoming the first Asian ensemble ever to win Orchestra of the Year at London’s Gramophone Classical Music Awards ceremony, commonly referred to as the Oscars of classical music. This honour was awarded for their magnificent live recordings of Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle available on Naxos. “This triumphant achievement for an ensemble galvanised by its inspiring Music Director to give their all is testament to James Jolly, Editor-in-Chief of Gramophone.” remarked James Jolly who stated “this triumphant achievement signifies triumphant achievement by an ensemble galvanised by its inspirational Music Director to give its all.”

The BOCHK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION PRIZE recognizes outstanding scientists and research teams residing in Hong Kong or affiliated institutions of higher education institutions that conduct research-related activities. As the only merit-based award available on Hong Kong territory, this prize supports scientific management practices for fair and objective award distribution; not more than five Grand Awards or 10 Awards/Certificates of Merit will be presented per term per category.

Ten Years was awarded the top prize at this weekend’s local film awards despite its controversial depiction of Hong Kong’s future, yet was nonetheless hailed a box office hit and is considered an iconic Hong Kong film by audiences worldwide. Yet its portrayal caused concern in Beijing over how Beijing view their semi-autonomous city is depicted. Veteran martial arts icon Sammo Hung was honored at this event by receiving a Lifetime Achievement award.

Hong Kong art was in the spotlight this week as the 2024 Sovereign Asian Art Prize winners were revealed. Pakistani artist Sameen Agha was honored with the Grand Prize ($30,000). Michelle Fung and Demet from Hong Kong were shortlisted in Women’s Art Prize with works Red Bean Stalk and Paint Palette Emulation respectively.
